Our Mission

It is the mission of Methodist Children’s Hospital Regional Outreach Program to improve the care of severely ill and injured children throughout South Texas.

We will strive to achieve this goal by providing quality education to health care providers caring for children, while emphasizing preventative aspects and patient safety. We will strive to serve as a community liaison for pediatric educational initiatives while collaborating with all health care providers, to initiate such programs in their communities.

This course will discuss current trends in breastfeeding education and patient teachings, tools and techniques to teach the patient and Family education associated with breastfeeding problems. The content of this course can be tailored to the needs of each specific nursing unit or family education needs.

This seminar is designed to increase the participant’s knowledge, skills and sensitivity level when caring for patients and their families who experiencing the pain of a maternal loss. Class content includes information on the dynamics of grief for parents, methods to assist patients in the healing process and practical steps to facilitate positive grieving behaviors.

This 5 hour course serves as an introduction to the fetal heart monitoring (FHM). This course provides novice practitioners with tools to understand the benefits/limitations of different instrumentation, interpret FHM data, understand the maternal/fetal physiology affecting fetal heart rate tracings, implement interventions, and evaluate the effect of interventions on maternal and fetal well-being.

This 2-day workshop earns 18 contact hours and 15.25 CMEs. Offered in a standardized format, the course may be used as a competency assessment to validate the knowledge and skills of experienced nurses. Participants analyze case scenarios using key physiologic principles. Sessions offer demonstration, practice and testing of the following skills: Auscultation, Performing Leopold's Maneuvers, Placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and spiral electrode, Interpretation of tracings, Identification of indicated nursing interventions, Communication and Documentation.

This 2 hour course provides an introduction 2008 National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Workshop Report on Electronic Fetal Monitoring. Comparison is made between the 1997 NICHD Terminology/Recommendations and the 2008 NICHD Terminology/Recommendations. Analysis of fetal monitoring tracings using the 1997 terms compared to the 2008 terms is accomplished with the respective management recommendations.

This 2 hour course with related demonstration/drill offers an overview to this challenging obstetrical emergency detailing the physiology of Shoulder Dystocia, predictability, risks, signs, management strategies, and maternal and fetal implications.

This 2 hour course offers an overview of hypertensive complications of pregnancy. Topics include: definition/classifications of hypertension, pathophysiology of the disease, assessment, management goals & interventions. The management of the acute & critical associated complications of HELLP & DIC are also discussed.

A 6 hour educational offering designed to educate Labor & Delivery nurses regarding risk management as it relates to the obstetric field. We will discuss Risk Management, discuss the regulatory entities that govern our practice, discuss documentation & communication pitfalls. Finally, we will attempt to develop our critical thinking skills in order to incorporate clinical findings, knowledge of pathophysiology with patient responses using case scenario analysis.

This 2 hour lecture defines diabetes classifications, hormonal influences on pregnancy metabolism, the role of insulin & insulin resistance, diagnostics, therapeutics and both the maternal & fetal implications of diabetes. Obesity is discussed as it relates to diabetes & how it creates obstetrical challenges in the Antepartum/Intrapartum period.
